Although you don't need to create unique images for each device type, we've included desktop and mobile example images for nearly each category.
Images uploaded to the Customizer will respond to device and screen size, but you can also upload individual images to hide or show by device, as well. (In case you want to show something on desktop but not mobile, for example.)
